Following the Carolina Panthers loss to the Denver Broncos at Super Bowl 50, ex-NFL player Bill Romanowski took to Twitter to criticize Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton, who appeared solemn at a post-game press conference.
Newton, who won his first NFL Most Valuable Player award the night before the big game, gave short answers to reporters before exiting the press conference Sunday night. Calling out Newton, Romanowski tweeted: “You will never last in the NFL with that attitude. The world doesn’t revolve around you, boy!”
Twitter users, who quickly pointed out that Romanowski has been fined multiple times by the NFL for on-field misconduct, criticized the former football player for his use of the racially insensitive word, historically used as a way to diminish African-American men and remind them of their “place” in the world.
Following the ongoing conversation of race and the sometimes insidious framing of Newton in the media, Romanowski’s comment appeared deliberate and purposeful, drawing ire from both fans and fellow football players.

Boy? You never watched Good Times Bill? https://t.co/YV2wrjvZP5

Former #NFL linebacker @billromanowski was always a jerk & now I know he’s a racist jerk. Calling a black man a “boy” is not ok. #CamNewton

In an attempt to backtrack, Romanowski deleted the tweet and apologized for using the word, which he insisted was taken out of context.

Calm down everyone! I meant he needs to grow up!

I apologize for that remark ‘boy’. It was not intentional or even trying to disrespect others. Peace everyone.

During the post-game interview, Newton told reporters that the Panthers will “be back” after their 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos.
“It wasn’t nothing special that they did,” he said of the Broncos win. “We dropped balls, we turned the ball over, gave up sacks, threw errant passes. That’s it. They scored more points than us.”
